About Damjan Komel

Damjan Komel Originally from Nova Gorica, Slovenia. His artistic language describes man`s constant fight with his own nature. Though the organic forms of Warriors of Light or the other sculptures in different materials - marble, wood, clay or bronze he is trying to express his inner feelings, observations, frustrations, ideas and beliefs into contemporary art language. With the knowledge of traditional carving methods, mixed with today`s modern carving techniques, his sculptures assume the power to create within the viewer the desire to touch the sculpture. In the last few years he has created many sculptures with increasing public and critical success.

The space without sculpture is body without soul!

Biography / CV of Damjan Komel

Me Myself>>> Born in 1971 in Šempeter nearby Nova Gorica, Slovenia.
I was lucky enough to met a very fine Slovenian sculptor Janez Pirnat in 2001 who challenge all my knowledge about stone sculpting I have acquired so far. Following a part in the stone workshop “Siparis” where Pirnat was my first tutor. I then continued to study sculpture and ceramic at the Famul Stuart School of Art in Ljubljana from 2001 to 2004. Meanwhile I attended few stone workshops by 2002 of which Marušiči (Croatia) is best known. Guided by sculptor Mrs. Gail Morris again my knowledge expanded further. After 2005 I became involved there also as a lecturer - Kornarija Art Workshop.

Over the last years I have taken part in many group exhibitions in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Thailand and UK. In last few years I have took part in different International stone and wood symposiums. I am member of Prologo Art Association in Gorizia (I). I live and work between Udine (I) and Nova Gorica (SLO).

Artist Statement of Damjan Komel

Who drew the first image and who was the first one trying to express their own feelings by means of a primitive instrument? Why did our ancestors try to catch a glimpse of nature and life by depicting it onto a wall or in a tune they played? We might never be sure about it, but we can assume they were driven by an inner wish to be closely connected, united with nature.

No matter if through creating a cave drawing or a pipe of bone, the fact is man`s inborn wish is to express feelings, dreams or frustrations. But inside every human being there is also a wish to survive, and that is why the prehistoric paintings depict hunting, fight for food, fight for life. Only later on nature was depicted as something beautiful and worth admiring. Since the beginning, man has been a warrior, and in some way, art has been used as a tool in the fight for survival.

Through the window of my soul I am trying to find the antique language of the warriors of light, which creates noble beauty from the heart and its spiritual depths. Of old, man fights for survival, food, home, love, family and social status. In the past the knife, the arrow, the sword - the weapons with a blade - were the means to achieve these goals.

Today we fight with words to achieve these same goals. The word can make us happy, but it has also the power to hurt us and cause pain. Today some of us do not realise that all of us are warriors of light and the word.

Damjan Komel started to explore the stone carving with stone faces with sculptor Mr. Janez Pirnat in his studio in Sipar (Croatia). Always fascinated by the abstract sculptures of Negovan Nemec and Costantin Brancusi he starts to develop his own sculpture language. After he studied in Famul Stuart school of Arts in Ljubljana he began to learn traditional stone carving and to collaborate with sculptor Mrs. Gail Morris in Art Workshop called Kornarija.

Since 2006 he began to work on "Warriors of Light" series in carrara marble. His challenge is to express the life fight with five elements - shields, that everyone feel inside to protect the life goals - food, home, love, family and social status. This five elements affected all his sculptures and his work began instantly to be recognised.

The latest work are the Visionary seeds made in stone, marble, wood and bronze where he attempt to describe the action we need to change the way of thinking for better tomorrow. He wish to plant seeds of confidence, optimism and future potential in our consciousness for a better future, for our children. At the same time this are seeds of infinite knowledge and wisdom - it is all possible because they are seeds of endless possibilities.
